In a striking and unexpected move, the Ontario Liberals have announced that Bonnie Crombie will resign from her position as party leader effective immediately. Crombie's resignation is not entirely surprising, as she had previously indicated her intention to step down after experiencing a disappointing level of support during the Ontario Liberal convention, following a lackluster third-place finish in the recent elections. While she had expressed determination to remain leader after successfully restoring the Liberals to official party status in February 2025, she ultimately failed to secure her own seat, nor did any candidates from Mississauga win in the election.
When the leadership review took place in September, the results were lukewarm at best. Only 57 percent of delegates supported her continuation as leader, a margin that many interpreted as a clear sign of waning confidence in her leadership. Despite her initial assertion that she would learn from the feedback and continue in her role, she changed her stance just hours later, announcing her plan to resign while agreeing to stay on until a new leader was identified. However, since then, Crombie has been noticeably absent from party events.
On Wednesday, she officially confirmed her immediate resignation, stating, "After careful reflection, I have made the decision to step aside as Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. As we begin a new year, I believe this is the right moment for me and for the party to move forward. I am incredibly proud of the work we have done together to rebuild and renew our party."
In response, party president Kathryn McGarry announced that an interim leader would be appointed while preparations for a full leadership contest are underway, with details expected to be revealed soon.
This sudden vacancy has opened the door for several potential candidates who are now likely to declare their intentions to run for leadership more definitively. Among them is Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith, who was the runner-up to Crombie in the 2023 leadership race and has indicated he is forming a team for another attempt at leading the provincial party. Other members of the caucus, such as Lee Fairclough and Rob Cerjanec, are also reportedly considering their chances for a bid when the leadership race officially begins.
Interestingly, Ted Hsu, who finished fourth in the previous leadership contest, has announced that he will not be seeking the position again. Meanwhile, former Liberal Party president Mike Crawley is contemplating a run, adding another layer of intrigue to the leadership race that is now unfolding.
