Over the past few days, numerous prominent musicians have raised their voices against the ICE raids initiated by the Trump administration in Minneapolis, which have tragically resulted in multiple fatalities and ignited widespread outrage across the nation. Among these artists, Bruce Springsteen stands out for using his platform to shine a light on the troubling circumstances unfolding.
On January 28, the iconic rocker unveiled his new protest song "Streets of Minneapolis," directly responding to the protests and the associated violence. Remarkably, within just hours of its release, the track achieved bestseller status.
The Impact of "Streets of Minneapolis"
At the time of writing, "Streets of Minneapolis" dominates the iTunes Top Songs chart, showcasing its popularity among listeners. This new hit quickly climbed to the top, overtaking Bruno Mars' track "I Just Might," which had enjoyed a two-week reign on the Hot 100.
Lyrics that Speak Volumes
Springsteen's lyrics in "Streets of Minneapolis" are strikingly direct, as he does not shy away from confronting controversial figures. In this song, he refers to the president as "King Trump," while also honoring Alex Pretti and Renee Good—two American citizens who lost their lives due to ICE actions. Additionally, Springsteen takes aim at Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem, accusing them of perpetuating harmful falsehoods.
Springsteen's Words on His New Release
In a heartfelt message shared on his website, Springsteen explained his creative process: "I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday, and released it to you today in response to the state terror being inflicted upon the city of Minneapolis. It is dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors, and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good." He concluded with a simple yet poignant message: "Stay free."
A Surge in Classic Hits
Interestingly, as "Streets of Minneapolis" takes the spotlight, two of Springsteen's earlier tracks resonate with contemporary themes, climbing the iTunes Top Songs chart as well. "Born in the U.S.A." makes a return at No. 130, while "I’m on Fire" re-enters the rankings at No. 135, showcasing the continued relevance of Springsteen's musical legacy.
Albums Also Gaining Traction
In addition to his single, five of Springsteen’s full-length albums are performing admirably on the iTunes Top Albums chart, largely thanks to the attention drawn by his new politically charged release. Notably, "Nebraska" and "Born in the U.S.A." occupy spots in the top 20, ranking at No. 18 and No. 20 respectively. Furthermore, his "Greatest Hits" collection has soared over 50 positions to land at No. 27, while "Born to Run" and "Land of Hope and Dreams" are positioned lower on the list at Nos. 134 and 160, respectively.
Reflecting on a Busy Year
The release of "Streets of Minneapolis" marks Springsteen's first musical offering of 2026, following a particularly active 2025. Last year, the Grammy-winning artist introduced an EP titled "Land of Hope and Dreams," which was recorded live during a concert in Manchester shortly before its release. This project included an impassioned critique of Trump.
Additionally, 2025 saw Springsteen releasing two box sets. The first, "Tracks II: The Lost Albums," debuted in June, featuring seven previously unreleased full-length albums. Later in the year, the "Nebraska '82: Expanded Edition" was launched in October to coincide with the release of the biopic "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere," which chronicles the making of his iconic album "Nebraska." This film, starring Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, hit theaters that same month.
