Architect Tristan Burfield has crafted a bushfire-resilient annexe for a coastal holiday home in Australia, showcasing a unique blend of functionality and design. The annexe, located near Eagle Rock on Victoria's southern coast, provides additional sleeping areas for a larger holiday home nestled among bushland, surf beaches, and limestone cliffs. Burfield's design philosophy leans into the area's mandatory bushfire design requirements, viewing them as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. He describes his approach as a 'craft of composition', where the pairing of agricultural materials and detailing solutions creates a subtle, yet captivating architectural experience. The annexe's simple L-shaped plan is organized around a paved garden, with tall windows set within skinny timber frames made from Blackbutt timber, an Australian hardwood with natural fire resistance. Galvanized steel panels above these frames extend into a shallow canopy, punctured by circular openings for rain chains gradually covered by climbing plants. The use of galvanized steel is a nod to the owner's frustration with a previous external timber door that had sagged, and it continues into the bathrooms in a raw steel 'trough' sink. The main bedroom is centered around a freestanding log burner, and an additional bathroom is located alongside the bunk room. Burfield's innovative approach to bushfire-resilient design is evident in the lifting of the bottom edge of external window glazing, creating a subtle yet impactful moment both inside and out.
