BYU Softball: Toughest Schedule Yet! | Eakin's Cougars Gear Up for a Challenging Season (2026)

BYU softball team ready for a challenging 2026 season

BYU softball coach Gordon Eakin is gearing up for a demanding schedule in 2026, and he's taking full responsibility for it. After 24 years in the sport, he's never faced a schedule like this, and it's all his doing. Eakin's top home run hitters include Riley Jensen, Jessica Purcell-Fitu, Violet Zavodnik, Oli Keohohou, Hunter Ava, and Angeline Quiocho.

Eakin's approach to the Big 12 has evolved. Initially cautious, he's now embracing a more aggressive strategy. The Cougars will face a formidable lineup of opponents, including No. 4 Tennessee, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 UCLA, No. 9 Clemson, No. 22 Washington, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Missouri, and Auburn. This challenging schedule is designed to push the team to new heights.

"We've grown enough, and our players are ready for the competition," Eakin said. "The best way to improve is by playing the best. This preseason schedule is our toughest ever, and we're ready for it. It will prepare us for the top-ranked Texas Tech."

The Big 12 has brought a renewed energy and competitive spirit to the team. Despite a 32-17 record in 2025, including 13-11 in the Big 12, BYU missed the NCAA Tournament. Eakin is confident that his team and schedule are now set to make a strong comeback in May.

Among the standout players are Ilove’a Brittingham, Lilly Owens, Hailey Morrow, and Kaysen Korth. Brittingham, a 5-foot-9 sophomore, was ranked among the top 100 players and is a versatile utility player and outfielder. Owens, a 5-foot-9 senior, had an impressive season with minimal errors and a high batting average. Morrow, a 5-foot-9 shortstop, is a leader and a selfless team player. Korth, a 5-foot-7 senior pitcher, demonstrated resilience despite injuries, maintaining a strong record.

The season opener is set for February 5th against No. 4 Tennessee in Clearwater, Florida. With a challenging schedule and a talented roster, BYU softball is poised for a memorable 2026 season.
