In a move that might ruffle some feathers, especially among fans still bitter about previous management's tactics, the Giants have secured a Major League contract with right-handed reliever Rowan Wick. This announcement, made on Friday, is all about planning ahead for the 2027 season. Wick, 33, underwent Tommy John surgery a few months back and will sit out the entire upcoming season. However, the contract includes a team option for the following year, which the Giants are likely to exercise unless Wick suffers a setback.
So, why did the Giants go after Wick? Well, it's a strategic move to secure a talented player who's currently rebuilding his career overseas. Wick, a former ninth-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, has five years of MLB experience under his belt. He made his debut with the San Diego Padres in 2018 and played for the Chicago Cubs from 2019 to 2022, before spending 2023 in the Minor Leagues. Across 146 appearances and innings, Wick has consistently performed, with an impressive 3.82 ERA and 3.49 FIP.
Wick's journey took him to Japan in 2024, where he played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). His first year overseas was a success, posting a 2.60 ERA and 2.74 FIP. But it was his 2025 season that truly shone. In 40 appearances and 42.2 innings, Wick's ERA was an incredible 0.84, with a 1.39 FIP. While this wasn't the best in the league (that honor goes to righty Daichi Ishii, who allowed just one run in 53 innings), Wick's performance was exceptional.
During his standout season, Wick dominated across the board. While an ERA starting with a '0' often involves some luck, Wick's ability to stay out of trouble is undeniable. He allowed just 5.3 hits and 2.3 walks per nine innings, resulting in a stellar 0.844 WHIP. He also didn't surrender a single home run all year.
The Giants are hoping Wick can replicate this performance when he returns to the States. However, they'll have to wait a while to see if he can deliver.
In the meantime, San Francisco has an open spot on their 40-man roster. To facilitate this signing, injured reliever and offseason acquisition Jason Foley was transferred to the 60-Day Injured List. Wick will likely follow suit, leaving the team's roster at 39.
