A Fiery Response: Formula E Champion Claps Back at Max Verstappen's Controversial Comments
In a bold move, Formula E champion Lucas Di Grassi has spoken out against Max Verstappen's recent remarks about the new F1 cars, which many have interpreted as a dig at the all-electric series. This comes after Verstappen's explosive comments during the Bahrain pre-season test, where he likened the new F1 cars to "Formula E on steroids" due to their complex energy management systems.
Verstappen, a four-time F1 champion, didn't hold back, even suggesting that these new regulations could hasten his retirement. Despite his contract with Red Bull extending until 2028 and his previous statements about his upcoming final F1 contract, the Dutchman has often hinted at an early exit.
"The 28-year-old's potential departure would undoubtedly be a massive loss for F1, but his branding of the 2026 regulations as 'anti-racing' hints at an earlier exit than expected," Di Grassi commented.
The comparison to Formula E, particularly regarding the power unit split and its impact on driving style, has caused quite a stir. Di Grassi, a former F1 driver himself, was quick to respond, becoming the first current Formula E champion to do so.
"Formula E cars, Gen 4.5 and 5, will leave the current F1 cars in the dust," Di Grassi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, sharing an article from The Race that covered Verstappen's quotes. He added, "You're welcome to come and experience the fastest cars on the planet in just a few years."
