Tesla's Full Self-Driving: A Subscription-Only Future in Australia (2026)

Get ready for a game-changer in the world of electric vehicles! Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature is about to undergo a major shift in Australia. But here's where it gets controversial...

From April 1, 2026, Tesla owners in Australia will no longer be able to purchase the FSD Supervised software outright. Instead, they'll have to subscribe to it on a monthly basis.

This move mirrors a similar decision made in the US, where Tesla has already implemented a subscription-only model for its advanced driving technology.

So, what does this mean for Tesla owners down under? Well, if you're an existing owner with a Tesla equipped with 'Hardware 4' cameras (think Model 3s post-facelift in 2023 and Model Ys produced since early 2024), you have until March 31, 2026, to purchase the FSD upgrade outright. After that, you'll be stuck with the subscription model.

And this is the part most people miss: a significant number of Tesla owners in Australia have vehicles equipped with older Hardware 2 and 3 cameras. These vehicles cannot use the FSD Supervised feature on local roads, and Tesla has promised a free update once the software is ready for these older models.

But here's the catch: Tesla hasn't provided a timeline for this update, leaving many owners in a state of uncertainty.

The subscription model, priced at AU$149 per month, will be the only way to access Tesla's FSD technology from April onwards. Customers can still order FSD Supervised with new vehicles until the end of March, but after that, it's subscription or nothing.

Tesla has also announced that a current promotion offering free transfers of FSD or Enhanced Autopilot software from an existing Tesla to a new one will end on March 31, 2026. So, if you were considering taking advantage of this offer, you'll need to act fast!

Tesla's decision to move to a subscription-only model for its flagship technology has sparked debate among enthusiasts and industry experts. Some argue that it's a smart move, allowing Tesla to continuously update and improve its software without the burden of one-time purchases. Others see it as a cash grab, with concerns over potential price hikes and the lack of ownership associated with subscriptions.

What do you think? Is Tesla's subscription model a forward-thinking strategy or a step too far? Let us know in the comments!
