Twisted Sister's Reunion Tour Canceled: Dee Snider's Health Issues Take Center Stage
The legendary heavy metal band Twisted Sister's future is in question after their longtime frontman, Dee Snider, announced his departure due to a series of health challenges. In a recent Instagram post, Snider expressed his determination to continue performing, stating, 'The idea of slowing down is unacceptable to me. I'd rather walk away than be a shadow of my former self.' He attributed his struggles to degenerative arthritis, a condition that has impacted his ability to perform.
The band's upcoming tour, scheduled to commence on April 25 in Sao Paulo and continue through the summer, was highly anticipated. It would have marked the first time the reunited band performed together in a decade, featuring core members Jay Jay French, Eddie Ojeda, and Snider. However, the tour has been canceled due to Snider's unexpected resignation.
Snider's journey with Twisted Sister began in early 1976, and the band rose to prominence with their 1984 album 'Stay Hungry,' which included iconic hits like 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and 'I Wanna Rock.' This success, however, came with controversy. The band's music drew criticism from groups like the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), which lobbied for 'Parental Advisory' labels on releases deemed vulgar.
On September 19, 1985, Snider made a bold statement during a Senate hearing, defending the song 'Under the Blade' against Tipper Gore's comments. He argued, 'As the creator of 'Under the Blade,' I can say categorically that the... only sadomasochism, bondage, and rape in this song is in the mind of Ms. Gore.'
Despite Twisted Sister's success, Snider faced personal challenges. In a 2024 interview, he revealed the depths of his struggles after the band's breakup in the late '80s, including double bankruptcy and a career collapse. He shared, 'When you fall down like I did and lose everything... things just went incredibly south. People need to hear those stories and know they're not alone.'
A turning point came when Snider's wife asked him to write a Christmas song. This led to a collaboration with Céline Dion, who recorded the track 'The Magic Of Christmas Day (God Bless Us Everyone)' for her 1998 album. Snider's publishing rights to the song make it a valuable creation, even though it was never intended for commercial release.
As Twisted Sister navigates this challenging period, fans are left wondering about the band's future. Snider's health issues have undoubtedly cast a shadow over the reunion tour's cancellation, leaving fans and the music industry alike awaiting further updates.
